Exorbitant Hikes in Immigration Fees Will Make Applications Unaffordable for Many

The U.S. Citizenship application fee will soar from $640 to $1,170, while the fee to apply for permanent residence from inside the USA will skyrocket from $1,220 to $2,195 (with all interim benefits), a 79% increase in the fee. Since U.S. permanent resident applications filed inside the USA require the simultaneous filing of an I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, which will soon carry a fee of $555, the total cost to apply for permanent residence from inside the USA will increase from $1,760 to $2,750. The current administration has made it an overt priority to prevent poorer foreign nationals from immigrating to the U.S. despite the benefits that the U.S. has realized over the centuries from the arrival of an economically diverse pool of immigrants. The distaste for the immigration of poorer foreign nationals has led this administration to roll out an enhanced version of the "Public Charge Rule", the implementation of which has been enjoined by federal judges pending a Court hearing and possibly a trial.
Besides the enhanced "Public Charge Rule", the administration has made it virtually impossible for foreign nationals to apply for "fee waivers" when submitting immigration applications, even if the application is by a lawful permanent resident for U.S. citizenship. Accordingly, lawful permanent residents who may have been living in the U.S. for not just years, but decades and are otherwise entitled to procure U.S. citizenship, would be unable to become U.S. citizens if they have fallen on hard times. If a person does not become a U.S. citizen, that person will continue to be at risk of deportation, even if they were falsely convicted of a crime for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
